$2 million bond for suspected New Franklin killer

(New Franklin) — An 18-year-old man has been charged in the deaths of a prominent attorney and his wife, who were beaten with a sledgehammer at their Portage Lakes home.

Two counts each of aggravated murder, aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary and one count of grand theft were filed Thursday against Shawn Ford Jr. of Akron. He was dating the couple's teenage daughter.

He was jailed in adjacent Portage County on an unrelated obstructing justice charge and bond was set at $2 million at his Friday arraignment.

Autopsies showed 56-year-old Jeffrey Schobert of New Franklin and his 59-year-old wife, Margaret, died of head wounds. They were found in their bedroom by a construction worker.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports authorities are investigating whether the earlier assault of their daughter could be related. Police say the 24-year-old man jailed in that attack isn't suspected in the murders.
