(Cleveland)- Work is underway on the new Cuyahoga County government office complex at East 9th and Prospect.
It's part of the redevelopment of the Ameritrust complex. County Executive Ed FitzGerald says the project will eventually save the county $126 million over 20 years by centralizing county government.
The eight story building will house 750 county employees and will provide 220,000 sq. ft. of rental space.
Geis Companies is working on the project. Co-owner Fred Geis says the new building will have a green roof for parks on the top and it kicks off the development of a brand new hotel tower.
The skywalk will remain and Geis says they added some additional bracing to make sure it doesn't tip over while the building around it comes down.
The Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority has issued $75.5 million in bonds to help pay for the project.
Demolition started Tuesday morning and is expected to be completed by July 2014.
