Big night in Cleveland sports

(Cleveland) - Tonight, at the Renaissance Cleveland hotel the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission celebrates the best in local sports from 2013.

It's an unforgettable evening of sports tributes and highlights, exciting presentations and Cleveland sports celebrities all in one room.

The Commission's Dave Gilbert says all guests can bid on autographed sports memorabilia and unique entertainment experiences in the silent auction and then enjoy a great dinner!

The star-studded gala recognizes the best and brightest in Cleveland's amateur and professional sports and showcases the excitement and enthusiasm our community has for its sports teams and athletes past, present and future.

Gilbert says former Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, and other professional and amatuer athletes will be honored as well. More than 1,000 people are expected to attend the event which is being hosted by Ohio State legend Chris Carter.

In the past, Sports Awards has been emceed by notable greats including Mike Tirico, Kirk Herbstreit, Jim Nantz, Bob Costas, Dan Patrick, Chris Rose, Roy Firestone, Greg Gumbel, Robin Roberts and Bill Walton.

The Greater Cleveland Sports Awards were created in 2000 by the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission as its annual fundraising event.

Over the past 13 years, the Sports Awards has become the Sports Commission's largest fundraiser and supplies the organization with a significant portion of its operating budget.

Gilbert tells Newsradio WTAM 1100, this benefit enables the Sports Commission to continue its mission to measurably enhance the economy, image and quality of life in the Greater Cleveland community.

Since 2000, the Sports Commission has been responsible for attracting and creating over 135 sporting events and activities to the Greater Cleveland area, generating more than $395 million in economic impact.
