Delinquent fine collections up in Cuyahoga County

(Cleveland) - Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald, Clerk of Courts Andrea Rocco, and County Councilman Michael J. Gallagher today announced that during the second year of its program to collect delinquent court fines and fees, Cuyahoga County has successfully recouped more than $1 million for county taxpayers.

"Our delinquency fines and fees collection is another example of how we have successfully reformed and modernized the Clerk of Courts office so it works for everyone," said FitzGerald. "This administration will continue taking the steps necessary to ensure we serve constituents with smart, effective services."

In August 2012, the Cuyahoga County Council and Executive Ed FitzGerald jointly announced the program, designed to recover uncollected court costs, some of which dated back to 2002, from criminal, civil, and domestic cases.

"This program under the leadership of our Clerk of Courts Andrea Rocco has done exactly what it was created to do; it was created to bring in court fees and fines that should have been paid over the past two decades," said Councilman Gallagher. "Without the direction of Clerk Rocco we wouldn't have gone from having $60 million of uncollected court costs to now over $1 million collected and counting."

County Clerk of Courts Andrea F. Rocco said, "With the ongoing leadership of the County Executive and County Council, the Clerk of Courts' office will continue to strive toward excellence. This includes the collection of delinquency fines and fees but also other initiatives such as distributing the public's unapplied deposits and streamlining and digitizing our processes. This is another common sense solution that benefits the taxpayers. In just a year, we have added money to the general fund without raising taxes."

"Collecting over a $1 million in a little over a year provides a significant contribution to the revenue for the Courts and the County," added Councilman Michael Gallagher.
