Kyrie Irving named to the 2014 all-star team

(Cleveland) Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving has been voted as a starter to the 2014 Eastern Conference All-Star team by the fans, it was announced today by the NBA. Irving finished with 860,221 total votes in the NBA All-Star Balloting program.

Irving is the third Cavs player to start in an All-Star Game, joining LeBron James (2005-10) and Shawn Kemp (1998). He also will become the fifth-youngest player in NBA history to play in his second All-Star game (James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett and Isiah Thomas).

Last year, Irving became the 16th All-Star in Cavaliers history, the sixth-youngest player ever named to an All-Star team and one of seven to make it before turning 21, after being named to the All-Star team as a reserve. He recorded 15 points on 6-11 (.545) shooting, including 3-6 (.500) from long range, three rebounds and four assists in 25 minutes in his first All-Star appearance in Houston.

In 39 games this season, Irving has averages of 21.7 points (5th in East), 3.0 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 1.2 steals in 35.2 minutes per game. He owns the highest scoring average among Eastern Conference point guards (second among all NBA point guards) and is one of only three players in the NBA with averages of at least 21.0 points and 6.0 assists per game in 2013-14 (Stephen Curry and LeBron James, min. 30 games). He won the Eastern Conference Player of the Week award for games played between December 9-15 this season.

The 2011-12 Rookie of the Year is also the reigning Foot Locker Three-Point Contest Champion, winning the event in 2013 to join Mark Price (1993 and ’94) as the only Cavs players to win the contest. He also participated in the 2013 BBVA Rising Stars Challenge, recording a team-high 32 points on 14-20 (.700) shooting, six rebounds and six assists in 27 minutes for Team Shaq.

The 2014 NBA All-Star Game will be played at New Orleans Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana on Sunday, February 16th at 8:00 p.m. ET.
