(Ravenna) - A 15-year-old girl was killed Sunday night after the car she was driving collided with a train. It happened on South Prospect Street and Summit Road.
According to the Portage County Sheriff's Department, Sierra Thornton had her learner's permit and was driving the SUV with her father and four sisters as passengers.
The Sheriff's Department believes Sierra may have panicked when she saw a train approaching.
Sierra was a sophomore at Ravenna High School. Two of her sisters attend an elementary school, another attends a middle school, and a fourth sister is a freshman at Ravenna High.
Ravenna Schools Supt. Dennis Honkala says grief counselors are on hand at the various schools to assist students who were friends with Sierra or who know her sisters.
The girl's sisters were taken to Akron Children's Hospital and her father to Robinson Memorial Hospital.
Their conditions have not been released.
