(Cleveland Heights) - There is a growing memorial outside the now closed Colony Restaurant on Lee Road, as customers, friends, and family members pay their respects to Jim Brennan.

The owner of the popular eatery was shot and killed during an attempted robbery Monday afternoon. At the door there are many flowers, mementos and other tributes to Brennan.

Cleveland Heights Mayor Dennis Wilcox said in a statement that Brennan was a community leader who hosted many charity and sports fundraisers.

Others say Brennan gave them their first job, or taught them the restaurant business. Customers told Newsradio WTAM 1100 that Brennan was a quiet man, but always had a smile and a hearty welcome for everyone.

Cleveland Heights Police Chief Jeffrey Robertson said officers were called to Brennan's Colony Restaurant and Tavern at about 1 p.m. Monday after reports of gunfire in the area.

He said officers found Brennan inside with gunshot wounds. Brennan was taken to an area hospital where he later died.

No arrests have been made in the shooting. Investigators say two suspects entered the restaurant in an attempt to rob it when Brennan confronted them.

The suspects are described as black males between the ages of 17 and 21 years old. They fled eastbound on Silsby Road, and remain at large.
