Route 57 upgrade in Elyria underway

(Elyria) - A makeover is underway on one of the most congested stretches of road in Lorain County: the stretch of Route 57 between the Ohio Turnpike and I-90, which has complicated interchanges and an unusual crossover system.

Joyce Miller of the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) District 3 tells WTAM 1100 that Route 57 in the area near Midway Mall will be widened to six lanes, the slip ramp interchanges with Midway Mall Blvd. and Griswold Rd. will be changed to standard intersections with traffic signals, and the 49th Street bridge over Route 57 will be torn down.

In addition, the cloverleaf interchange at I-90 and Route 57 will be torn out and replaced with a standard 'diamond' interchange.

Miller says work is already underway. A new gas line is being installed under Midway Mall Boulevard east of Route 57, temporary pavement has been put in at Midway Mall Boulevard and Leona Street to the west of Route 57, and tree clearing work is underway at Route 57 and I-90.

According to Miller, the project will take two years, but when it's done, Route 57 in that part of Elyria will be much safer on which to drive. The project is being done thanks to funding from Ohio's Jobs and Transportation Plan, in which revenue from the Ohio Turnpike is being made available for road projects close to the Turnpike.

ODOT has a web site with regular updates on the project.
